I work as a teacher and currently have a fulltime job but don't get paid as much as I should be making with my years of experience since I'm like a fulltime sub. I saw a job posting at a school I really liked advertising fulltime for a few months with opportunity to continue. Applied and got the interview plus a callback but was told the fulltime was offered to an “internal applicant” but a partime job opened up. This told me right away that they probably 99% already knew this was going to happen before the interview.
They offered me the “new” part time position but again I have a fulltime job right now with benefits which THEY KNEW. However if the part time job got close to offering me as much as fulltime heck I'd take it. They gave me a number for what I would make and it was basically a whole months salary less. I asked to negotiate and they downright refused to negotiate. Stating it is fixed. For those not familiar with teaching salaries, typically there is a grid based on your education and years of experience. However usually this doesn't mean negotiating is completely out of the question. Especially at private/independent schools that I work at but even public schools have told me if I get another job offer elsewhere they can negotiate. It just depends on the circumstances.
Them refusing to negotiate I found almost insulting. Now the thing about teaching is that even if you get hired for part time and don't have to come in every day, in most cases you still are putting in nearly fulltime work with having to plan and mark on your days off not to mention that you are still expected to coach and do other things within the school. The only way part time is viable is if you are a new parent or have another job. Neither which applies to me and obviously I'm not going to seek out a second job when currently I have a fulltime job . Honestly I don't know what they were thinking, that I would turn down my fulltime paying job for something not paying me as much? I do enjoy teaching but all this bs of not paying us as much as we should is draining and I think about switching careers often.
