Antiwork

My boss “forgot” my availability and scheduled me overlapping a shift with my other job.

I work at 2 bars. At the tiki bar, I'm a bartender. The bar is new (opened in October of 2021) and is still catching its sea legs, but promising and fun. The cocktails are super creative and intricate. I'm pretty well-respected and am often delegated the responsibility by my boss and other bartenders of coming up with custom requests on the fly. I worked pretty hard over the pandemic lockdown to learn everything I could about mixology and cocktail crafting to raise my financial floor and get a job as a bartender. This bar is my first bartending gig and I'm absolutely crushing it. I'm the only bartender getting personal shoutouts in Yelp reviews and have never had a single drink I've improvised turned down or sent back. Hell, my mocktails receive rave reviews! I have even impressed my boss with a few menu proposals, with a couple being…

At the sports bar, I'm a bar back. I started as a bar back back in spring of 2021 and filled in working other positions, like host and server too. I was promoted last week (out of necessity due to scheduling conflicts) and will be working my first shift as a pouring bar back (which is essentially all of the same responsibilities as a bartender for slightly more tips than a regular bar back) this Sunday during the Super Bowl. I'm not too excited about it, as it feels like I'm being thrown to the wolves after a single day of training this past Wednesday. I haven't been working with the POS system for months since they took the server position away back in the fall (which also sucked because servers got more tips than bar backs.)

Anyway, today I received next week's schedule from the sports bar. I had an overlapping shift with my tiki bar on a day I do not give the sports bar availability. Immediately emailed back stating this fact and their response:

“I must have forgot. Would you want to open and leave by …2?”

I hadn't had any issues with the management at the sports bar until this passed week with the “promotion” out of necessity. I'd even say the job was pretty great. Now, I did work a similar double shift between the two jobs back in late December, but my manager texted me and asked if I would be cool with it first. We worked out the schedule and it was a really tough 14 hour day, but fine otherwise. So no, you did NOT forget. You just assumed it would be fine since I did it once before.

I really want to be a bartender at the sports bar. It's super easy compared to the tiki bar's recipes and service, and the tips would be great. So… unfortunately I caved and agreed to work until 2pm next Saturday before working my shift at the tiki bar, but I did put my foot down this time and state that I wouldn't be able to do it regularly.

Why are people so shitty to workers? Like… you're already paying me minimum wage. All I ask is to be treated like a person, please. Don't try to piss on me and tell me it's raining.
