I don't know if this post is allowed, but I just wanted to thank everyone on this sub for sharing their experiences at the workplace.
I don't live in the US, but the work culture in my country (I live in SEA) isn't that great. I was always taught to keep my head down & essentially sell my soul to the company in hopes that they would reward me one day (or just be grateful I have a job). Similar sentiments that a toxic workplace would have. Anyway, I'm graduating from postgrad soon & I confess that this sub helped me gain the confidence to negotiate my first 'proper' salary as a full-time lecturer.
The initial offer was way below the market rate, but after thinking about it & reading the stories shared here, I decided to negotiate for a pay that was more in line with what I wanted. The university didn't even balk at the amount I asked for & was agreeable to it. It surprised me, & I realised how wrong I was in thinking that I wasn't worth that much in the job market.
So I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here for helping me just by sharing your experience. I sincerely appreciate it.
