Okay so I work at Outback Steakhouse as a server, and there's a few things that all of us servers have complained about multiple times. So our wage is $2.13/hr, which is typical for servers in this state. But in the 6 months I've worked here, no server has ever received a paycheck. And even weeks where I'm working 40 hours or more, you'd think that I'd get a paycheck of around $180, at the very least $100. I've asked the managers why we don't get paychecks and they tell us that it all goes to “taxes”. I guess I'd understand that if we were making $300 a night in tips that have to be taxed, but we're definitely not. And on top of that when servers clock out it is common practice for us to not put the real number of cash tips we've made that night, so the true taxable amount isn't even that high. I didn't really ask questions after that, but could my own personal taxes really be like $180 every two weeks? Am I crazy or does it just seem like bullshit?
Second complaint is that since we don't get a paycheck, the hours that we stay after close to do sidework are just us working for free. Most of us stay an hour or so after close because we have to finish cleaning up our designated areas in the kitchen, and during that time we obviously don't get tables because we're closed. Which means we're just working for free? And on top of that, the amount of shit we have to do as servers that isn't the job of a server is ridiculous. Our restaurant hasn't had a busser in the entire time I've been working there. And I'm used to pre-bussing from my other jobs, but here we have to entirely bus all of our tables. And at the end of the night, a pre-determined percentage of our tips gets tipped out to the host, the busser, and the bartender. But we don't have a busser… So where is that money going? To the host? And if so, why don't they bus our tables then?
Idk maybe I sound like a wimp or some shit, but every server there has the same complaints and plenty have quit over all of it. Does any of it seem right?
