Tales from a former Domino’s Pizza Assistant Manager

I have to tell this even though its been almost two years but I gotta let it out. I worked as an AM at Domino's in Asheville after I got laid off from Sprint after the buyout from T-Mobile for about a month or two. I have to tell this even though its been almost two years but I gotta let it out.

I worked as an AM at Domino's in Asheville after I got laid off from Sprint after the buyout from T-Mobile for about a month or two.

During this time

  • Management got mad at me for throwing away expired meat and insisted that I just change the expiration date sticker on the packaging (this was their internal rule)
  • Cooks/CSR's got paid $7.25, which ought to be criminal- When I had to conduct job interviews, they'd get mad at ME for not bringing them on board when they'd walk out after I mentioned the wages- I'd tell them it's because of the wages and they'd have nothing of it – instead saying maybe we need to reach out more to halfway houses and basically prey on the very desperate
  • Our DM once punched a wall repeatedly after (for once) having to deal with a Karen and seeing for himself how shitty that part of the job is – he later got fired at some point for threatening an employee I believe
  • They started me out at $11/hr (also ought to be criminal) during my training period – after which it was supposed to see a significant bump (I forget the actual number but it was something livable)
  • Refused to fix the AC at one of our locations and it would be hot af in there (one time, it reached 110 degrees)

Shit hit the fan more so when:

Our location went through a change of ownership to a different franchise. Basically the new ownership pretended they knew nothing of the raise I was promised after training was complete and tried to tell me Was lucky to still be getting the $11/hr because he was paying AM's in the locations he owned in upstate SC only $9.50/hr. He followed up why saying “You get what you put in with this company” as a way of dismissing the fact that this city is #1 most expensive in NC and in the top 3 if not #1 for the entire Southeast US, and he's here paying his management team wages lower than what you'd make holding a cardboard sign at the next red light.

Mind you, this was after not hearing a word from upper management for 3 whole weeks during the transition. We had no GM at my location either. First thing I hear after me and the other AM held the place down for 3 weeks while they coddled with paperwork (I assume), wasn't even a “thank you.” It was more of a “hey, we're the new ownership – any questions?”

The Genesis

Not long after this bald SOB midget Wish.com Stone Cold Steve Austin cosplaying looking mf gives me the “you get what you put in” line, I step outside to smoke and see the nearby McDonald's restored the lights on the sign and had put up a now hiring sign offering (starting at – not “up to”) 1.5x what I made as a manager just to be a PT fry cook. He leaves for the night, so I start plotting.

I come in the next day, and it's extra busy. New DM guy (mentioned in the last paragraph) told us before leaving to call him if we're ever slammed and he'll send someone to help us or he'll come out himself and help us. Guess who had two stubby, greasy, sausage links for thumbs and didn't honor that? That guy!

He not only didn't answer us, but he blocked my number, the other AM's number, and the store's landline phone number too!

Now by this point, we got a GM but her first day on the job hadn't even happened yet, so calling her would be a no-go. Besides, he made the offer for his efforts, not hers.

Anyways, out of sympathy for my fellow AM, I stayed after my scheduled clock-out time. I started to not feel so well. I tell the other AM this and he tells me to get out cause he's got an idea. I'm confused by this but get out and in to my car where it's warm. I look out my car window, and see him out of uniform leaving the store, carrying his work uniform in a plastic bag before he locks the doors and leaves his uniform at the door.

Nothing else is said to me by him, but I see him on the phone with his old supervisor as he heads to his car asking if the position he left behind there is still open. I take this hint that we're done with that shithole (I was quitting without notice after my shift anyways, but he jut made it a lot easier).

I walk up to the door, considering smearing my butt sweat on the glass, but change my mind after self-control kicks in and I also remember that shopping center its in has cameras. I look in one last time and see the absolute mad lad didn't even take the food out of the oven. It looked like he turned the heating element off, but left the conveyor belt running.

Very soon, I was watching an array of pizzas, pastas, deserts, and cheesy breads fall out the end of the oven and leave a huge mess. I grimaced and went home to recover and plan my next steps financially.

Where they are now:

I'm doing a different less-shitty job that pays something close to livable I guess, but I'm moving to LA once my lease here ends and getting my career started in post-production

The other AM works in some other restaurant now and makes a lot more than he did there.

Our GM that I met for a day once, she lasted two weeks there before doing similar and now she's a sous-chef somewhere in a nice part of Florida

The OG DM who got fired for threatening a delivery driver is working as a cashier at O'Reilly Auto Parts

Last I saw, the guy who denied me my raise and left his responsibilities on read is having all sorts of trouble keeping the Asheville locations staffed, but instead of competitive raises, he sits with a thumb up his ass wondering where all the workers went. Last time I spoke with him, I went back to return my store key and he tried to offer me $12/hr to come back (a WHOLE DOLLAR). I had to tell him “you get what you put in” and that that's why he can't find anyone.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
