Tl;dr non-profits are money hungry
So I worked for the Y. Ya know, big non profit, all about “family” and the “community.”
My wife and I are pregnant with our first (twins) and the cost of childcare in our western, non-coastal state would have exceeded the amount that my wife makes working in her industry, especially because we will be having 2.
Went to my boss and their boss to discuss what partial wfm would look like as I managed programs at 7 different locations, and beyond scheduling, email, calls and texts to participants and such (all which I can do anywhere) there really is only a minimal need for me to be in the office probably 2 days a week, and that is mostly so I can say hello to everyone and then leave to check on the sites.
They immediately explained how that COULD NEVER WORK because clearly my presence in the office is 100% necessary to successful OFF-SITE programs….wtf?
So I asked what I could do to take on extra responsibilities or grow the program to make 12k more a year (the cost of childcare for the year if we got a 50% discount on the in house program) and they said: we really like where you are right now, and we don't have the revenue to expand that far.
I made the mistake of saying I may need to look at other options that allow me to have and support a family. The next week I was asked to resign or be terminated for cause. The cause being: “failure to uphold expected program growth standards and hit revenue goals”
At a new company now, slightly higher wage (43k) but still trying to make 12-16k more monies just magically appear so that my wife and I can still work.
Problem is our small mountain town is turning into a resort town with the influx of out of state remote coastal work incomes that bought up property during covid. Housing has jumped 50-75% in the past two years.
Meanwhile the non-profit I worked for just posted my old job for $5 an hour more than I was making…wtf
Rant ended
