Was this a shitty move my company made?

I worked for a company who does contracts with bigger parent companies. My specific “project” I had worked for, ended around the end of march. We got a weeks notice, apparently the parent company had originally told us they would work with us until the end of the year, but turns out it was actually the end of the month ( i'm not really sure if our CEO misread the contract, or if the parent company randomly laid it on us tbh ) I was still laid off even before the week had ended because we ran out of contacts to call, but was then told that they had a new position for me in a new project that was starting up soon, was a VA job, higher pay, inbound calls rather than outbound like the previous project, and just all around seemed like a better position. So I was…

So I was all for it naturally… I was so happy that they were trying to keep us employed and not letting us go without a job. I got right on it as they sent me all of the paperwork, I even drove an hour away to have my fingerprints taken for a background check that they required. I mean within a few days of them telling me that our project was ending, I had everything on my end done for the new position. I will also mention, I believe my managers knew about our project ending for a few weeks before they decided to tell us.

My CEO suggested that I applied for unemployment while waiting for the new project to start up, as she had no idea when it would start up, couldn't even estimate it for me. So I've been essentially milking unemployment for a month now, applying for jobs I know I can't get hired for, I had to get my statewide Medicare insurance so I could go to my oncologist. I have not heard anything regarding the position, I have not been updated, contacted in any kind of way since I scanned and sent in my background check paperwork once I got back from the VA hospital. Again, this was near the end of March of this year. So it's been a little over a month now.

I was chatting with somebody who works within the company still, and she informed me that she heard all of our applications were “compromised” and they had to redo all of our applications in sections…?? I have no idea what that means. All I know is I was never informed of this, like I said nobody from the project or the company has updated me except for this girl that I know who still works there. She said she thinks it will be soon that it starts up. Another one of my ex coworkers that I talk to sometimes went ahead and got a different job because of the no contact issue.

After discussing with my partner, we both don't think I should even keep the position, but when they reach out to inform me it's starting up, I decline and state that it took far too long and I was never updated on anything. I will probably have to quit receiving unemployment as I will be rejecting work, but I don't care at this point. I also feel the same thing that happened with my previous project is liable to happen with this one anyhow.

What do you guys think of this? Do you think it was a shitty move on my company's part or do you think this was out of their control and I'm being too harsh?
