What exactly happened to the 8 hour work day?

I’ve been looking for work in a skilled trade, and most of the job listings are for 10 hour days, 5 days a week, and you need to be available if they need to call you in on a day off. And that’s just 10 hours on the job, I still have to get up early every day and spend who knows how long in traffic depending on absolutely nothing but chance. And no, the money definitely does not make up for it, I know of guys who’ve been in this trade for 10+ years who clear about $80,000 a year, which actually isn’t a lot where I live with the cost of living. Wasn’t one of the biggest labour wins supposed to be an 8 hour work day, with the whole idea being 8 hours for work, 8 for rest, and 8 for sleep?
