Why did it seem all unions sell future generations down the river?

This isn't the rule, but it seems to be the norm. Lots of long standing unions had nice pensions. Today it seems that most of them offer a 401k similar to non union jobs. Is there a reason that this happened? How did we lose such great benefits? My anecdotal case is my wife's uncle retires soon with a 100% pension of the average of his high 3. I realize that's a cream of the crop type pension, but my father and grandfather had nice pensions through Chevy and the state. My wife's cousin works for the same union as her father and the pensions gone. She has a 4% 401k match. How did it get this bad?
