Background: I have a physical disability (walk unaided) and several health issues, so “accidents” occur often with me. I work part time for a local county library.
About 3 weeks ago, I hit my head on the edge of my car door as I was exiting it to go into work for the day. I don't clock in, but the incident occurred about 5 minutes before the library opened and my work day started. I thought little of it, and my boss just told me to take it easy that day (On this day each week, it's just the two of us working.) That day was the last day I work each week. The next day, I could tell I had given myself a concussion, as I'd had several before. I already had a check up scheduled with my PCP a day later, so I had her confirm it- post concussion syndrome. I was already in the process of being sent to a neurologist for a different issue, and this accident helped bump it up to being seen within 10 days of this appointment.
I was still having issues, but I worked the following week as normal. The next week I saw the neurologist and got diagnosed with migraines, epilepsy, and another headache disorder. My insurance covers the cost of almost everything related to this. The concussion temporarily caused a worsening of symptoms Again, I thought nothing of filing a report because this happened off the clock, in my own property, and was due to my clumsiness.
Today, someone from the head library that oversees mine came over to do some work. The topic of the concussion came up because I had to inform my boss that I would need a date off in June to have an EEG done because the neurologist had ordered one and the date was one I was scheduled to work on. The person from the other library asked if I'd filled out an incident report. Obviously, I hadn't because there was no need, as my boss's boss had said to fill out one if something happens during the course of the day. This person said that since it happened on work grounds, I was required to fill a report out.
I work tomorrow, so I'll find out if I have to do so, if my boss reminds me. I plan on not bringing it up otherwise, as I find it stupid and a waste of time. It isn't covered under workman's comp, and my insurance covered the bills. It's above my pay grade to deal with the literal headache of filing out the form and having to explain a neurologist visit and the diagnoses.
