Retiring. Why give notice?

A friend of mine who is retiring soon didn’t like my answer. So I want to give her yours. She doesn’t want to give notice. She doesn’t want to have to wait and doesn’t want anyone in the office to make a big deal out of it. This is in a U.S. right-to-work state with no company policy or contract against simply walking out. The company doesn’t need notice because they usually don’t post for a new job for over two weeks afterward. They even take months to replace people. Okay, the company kind of needs notice because her boss would have to fill in for her and would appreciate knowing ahead of time. Then again, the boss does a bad job when filling in and won’t do things right even when told. Should she give notice to be nice? Or since the company doesn’t seem to care, should she…
