Abruptly fired then offered severance after receiving positive 90 day review and I am down in the dumps

I was fired last week from a programming job I really wanted to work out. From the start it was clear that my boss was not equipped to be an effective manager but I pressed on as he’s not the first crap manager I’ve had. Along the way there were two big issues that came up where expectations were not communicated to me at all and then I was deemed having failed when I didn’t meet them. I had a frank conversation with my manager after the first time and he owned up to it and apologized.

It happened again just two weeks later where there were due dates on tasks assigned to me that I was not aware of (but my boss was) and when I didn’t meet those dates, I was viewed negatively by other managers in the company.

Given that the company was fully remote, I reached out to another manager to discuss the issue and basically try to make an ally in the midst of a situation that seemed to be set up against me. It was then I was made aware that he was my boss’s boss and he said we’re fine and he would have a conversation with my boss. The call ended positively and I moved on.

A week later my boss and an HR person get me on a call where I am notified I am being fired effective immediately. I said to my boss on that call “you just gave me a very positive review last week, what changed?” He replied “I know but the decision is final”.

I’m distraught and now desperately searching for new work as I have a household to support (that includes my in laws). Is there something I could have missed? Is there any possibility of a wrongful termination suit here? I’m just lost …

TIA for any help you can give. If you must troll just please go easy on me I’m already pretty beat down. Thanks …

EDIT – the severance package is clearly worded that I would agree to not sue them no matter what comes up later or what I “discover” happened. That’s why I even thought about a wrongful termination suit because they know they are doing wrong (in my opinion of course) …
