Hygiene is an afterthought to profit for this company.
I stepped in dog mess while out completing deliveries in a van, and was instructed by management to continue with my shift. Personally, being stuck in a cabin with a smell of dog shit emanating from the pedals and cabin floor for hours is unacceptable working conditions in my book.
But considering the dog mess is also on the floor of the tote storage area at the back of the van, this means the totes, when placed on the floor as they always are – has come into contact with the dog mess. Since they have to be stored back into the rack, dog mess on the bottom of totes is mere centimetres above from open, uncovered food items for customers such as fruits, vegetables etc.
When carrying totes, this can also get on your apparel and thus your hands. There needs to be a requirement for return to depot in this case for sanitary reasons. Additionally, in the refrigerator section, I am quite sure the air is recirculated which is just what you want with bacteria from dog mess.
