I really don’t get “flexible availability”

I've applied for three retail jobs at this point, and they all list flexible availability as requirements, including weekends holidays and nights. That's fine since the store has to be open those times, and there aren't any big holidays in the summer, but don't you think they should at least be a bit more up front? The way one interviewer put it, I felt like I was being asked to have my *entire* schedule opened up, Monday to Sunday. Now my social anxiety doesn't help matters, but I tried my best not to sound vague when I said, “I'm available all day on weekdays and can do weekends.” It's like they're trying to make you not have a life before you work for them.
