It finally happened. I am server who has to tip out the kitchen staff because they are not getting paid enough.

Hello, I am a server at a restaurant who has become the source of a raise for the back of the house employees, which will consequently be a huge pay cut for me. I heard about this happening at other chain restaurants but not at a family owned place like this. Basically, the expo and food runners in the kitchen realized they were not getting paid enough so they asked management for a raise (which I totally understand and agree with). However, instead of giving them a higher hourly, they are now requiring us as servers to tip out DOUBLE our food sales in order to tip out said kitchen staff so they get paid appropriately. For context purposes, these employees do not claim tips and are paid above minimum wage. We make $3.50 an hour and end up having to pay 7k-10k a year in taxes. We now are…

We now are to tip out a total of 10% of our food sales instead of 5%. For instance, say my food sales tonight were $400, that means i would have to tip the busser $20, and ALSO the kitchen staff another $20, so $40 total. It does not sound like much but it adds up quick. And we are the only ones taxed on it. Keep in mind, this is based on food sales and not what we make in actual tips. So even if people don’t tip on carry out we still have to pay these people. The most fucked up part is that this new thing was only partially implemented. This might not even stay because the manager that put this in effect did not even have the full power to do this. Some servers were asked to tip this money out, and some weren’t. If this tip out system gets taken away, the servers and back of the house employees are going to turn against each other. The servers are going to seem greedy, when in reality it’s fucking capitalism that is turning us against each other. What a trip.
