Need advice on how to negotiate better pay with my employer by using a competing job offer

I’m currently in a position at my company where my skill set is unique and valuable to their success. I am, however, worked to the bone and attempts for negotiating a pay increase or promotion have been met with the regular corporate run around I don’t necessarily want to leave, but I do want to be compensated and recognized for my effort. Let’s say I apply to company A and they give me an offer that is more than my current company B is paying me. I plan to put company A on ‘hold’ for a week so I can ‘talk it over with my family’, while using this time to go to company B with basically ‘I have this offer at another place, pay me more or I’m out’

My concern is if A rescinds their offer and B says ‘cya’ and then I’m jobless.

What is the best course of action here

And just to clarify, I do enjoy working at my current company and would prefer to continue working there. I just want to be compensated for my efforts.
