Boomers obsessed with employment?

So my husband and I live with my dad, as my mom passed away a few years ago. About 5 months ago my husband lost his job, and I have had one this entire time. My husband has recently been very very sick with a mystery illness, back and forth to the ER, specialists, the entire ordeal. A massive hit to our mental health, etc. My dad has helped us with medical bills and we are thankful to be living with him in this housing/renting market. A nuke may go off, the work force is entirely shit, no one here pays great, so we decided that it was best that I worked my well paying job while he recovers and we can spend more time together instead of wasting our youth at a minimum wage job while we are still young. But everyday my dad drills into us that we need to save money, so we can retire and have social security. Which we all know will probably run out before we even get there.
We are young. We want to live life. I already work 40 hours a week as it is, and it isn't even a money issue. My dad just wants to hear that my husband has a job even though it could be making him entirely miserable and no money benefit.
I don't get it.
