I am 28 years old, Work for tech company for one of the richest billionaire in the UK. I am a mechanical engineer

I earn 40,000 per year and can only afford to scrounge by each month. have to share my accommodation with a college student who cant even clean a microwave

I was given the low salary because its “such a privilege to work here” and was told look at all the benefits you get:

– 27 annual leave days

– 10% pension contribution

– 10% annual bonus

– life insurance

– free onsite food

– Work culture

Well that's all great, but since December i fell ill with Covid, and have being having long covid related illnesses since then. have paid nearly £1000 in consultation visits and medication, which i am really getting fed of with. Medication that only works for me is Corticosteroids, the reason being is that my body just isn't working properly anymore, my immune system went into full overdrive, was bed bound. I was sick enough the whole time to not be able to work, but never sick enough to get hospitalized.

The whole system even in Europe is to just keep you happy enough so you keep working the whole time, life insurance is meant to fix you if you get any illness or need any surgery. That's all well and dandy expect if the problem is your body just doesn't work properly anymore.

Since falling ill i have being in and out of work like a Yoyo, People don't ask me to do anything for them anymore in work, i am being alienated. The worst part? they only gave me a 4% annual pay rise. everyone else in my company get promotions, even though i am the longest serving person in the company. They also gave me share options but the offer is terrible i am not going to buy into it.

This made me realize, i hate the current system, its outdated… I am not Antiwork, people have to work, but the system has to change. I want to be paid enough to live life, on my terms, not a companies.

I cant get state support for my illness, its not a disability, i cant do my job but my company cant fire me, everyday in the paper there are articles about unfair dismissal claims. I don't want disability, my mind is perfect. you cant live life on disability its £1000 a month…

My company refused to let me change my role to one that is more desk based. Asked to be made an Analyst, they refused, so i am handling in my notice and going back to education, I hope things will change, i know its not as bad as what's happening in the states.

Tell me things will change, i am not a negative person…
