Quitting job advice

I gave my 3 months notice period in writing and got a lot of pressure to retract my resignation. I was quite overwhelmed by all the effort to keep me that I said over the phone that I would stay. But after a week I'm wondering if it was the right thing and if I just caved in to the pressure. I didn't tell my next employer that I'm not going. Could I argue, 2 weeks after giving my notice that it still stands, because I didn't retract it in writing that it's still a valid notice period? I just find this so stressful. If I restart my notice period I have to ask my new employer to push my start date back. If I don't then I'm stressing that this counts as leaving on bad terms and I won't be able to get a reference and end up unemployed.
