I am doing a professional course in the field of finance which is like US – CPA/CFA. According to the rules of the Institute, we have to undergo a mandatory 3 years internship (sort of like Doctor's residency). 90% of the companies and firms pays bare minimum. You cannot even purchase gas with that amount let alone purchase food/rent. The employers don't pay because they say “we are teaching you so why should we pay you.” And at a good place you have to work on an average of 80 hours a week. According to the rules, maximum hours that can we worked are 35 hours a week. Employers are getting free labour at no cost. Some employers transmit the amount to bank account and later take cash back from the interns. The institute has a monopoly in the market because no college or university offers courses like them.
But now a new University is being opened up by the government with the sole purpose of destroying the monopoly of this course. So the stipend is doubled, maximum hours will be strictly enforced I'm every company. Internship period will be reduced to 2 years. The institute fears losing future students, so they are making the course more attractive.
