Vacation days are not yours to take.

Corporate America. Company has been making a big push for employee happiness, mental health, etc. This weekend, my brother (lives out of state) called and said he would be in town next week. Asked if we could golf one afternoon. Today I checked the group calendar. No one else was on vacation and I had no meetings scheduled next Wednesday. I sent an email to my team informing them I would take a 1/2 day off in the afternoon. My boss replied asking how important it is I take the afternoon off. I am upset because this is the first “vacation day” I’ve taken all year and think it’s ridiculous I have to give an explanation why I need time off. Especially when the company is making such a big push for employees to take time off for mental health.
