Special needs employees deserve living wages too.

So I’m calling around on behalf my high functioning autistic son for his first job. I want to talk to the managers and get a feel for how they would treat my son and willingness to accommodate him. Someone tells me about a dog boarding business in the next town is great with autistic adults. I call manager was a respite worker for years and hires lots of special needs workers. She goes on to tell me her special needs employees are the most loyal dedicated employees and she hires. The pay is $8/hr. 25min from Austin one of the most expensive places to live in the US. she also goes on to explain that she’s had teenagers ask for $20/hr and she doesn’t pay that!
