Im Done Working in Family Business

Hello, first time posting, I felt as though Antiwork would be a good place to vent about this. Please excuse the generic language in advance. I have 3 interviews lined up this week. I’m working while knowing that there’s a tangible end to this clusterfuck of a job, but today was another showing of some truly ugly colors. I work full-time at small, family-owned contractor. It’s been a transitional year, and I know my work has put some tremendous stability in the development of the modern business model they’re growing into. I have 3 interviews lined up this week. I’m working while knowing that there’s a tangible end to this clusterfuck of a job, but today was another showing of some truly ugly colors.

I work full-time at small, family-owned contractor. It’s been a transitional year, and I know my work has put some tremendous stability in the development of the modern business model they’re growing into.

In January, during my annual review, I was given a insignificant raise that hardly covered inflation, and they asked me to prove a value next time if I were to ask to a higher wage.

So, I went in early. I Stayed late. I acquired a lot of knowledge, and took on extra responsibilities to prove this value. For perspective, they would need minimum 2 workers just to replace the vast amount of tasks I complete on a daily basis.

Also, Im working under a series of verbal agreements to my compensation. In February, I first asked to work extended hours (45-50) without overtime wages to earn extra cash. This was agreed to, and gave me a set amount per week working an average of 45 hours per week, paid on an hourly basis with time card submission.

3 weeks ago, I asked to re-evaluate my position as I had put in all the value previously mentioned. I took away 3 things from this conversation: I had no advancement left here; my clerical duties are more important than the role I’ve grown into; and I will continue to need to fight tooth and nail to prove my value, but they want me “happy” working here, and they want to “treat me like family.”

But ultimately after this conversation, they agreed to my new wage rate at a salaried 45 hours per week.

Today, one of the owners stormed into my office to backpedal on the agreement. Of course it’s the week I start getting paid out.

Now Im salaried at my new wage at 40 hours a week instead, in lieu of the previously agreed to 45 hours.

I essentially earned no increased take-home money from this “raise” as my flexible hourly rate allowed me to earn just as much as I’m about to.

I’m too tired to fight this battle, and instead am focusing on my next career move and these upcoming interviews.

What are everyone else’s perspectives/experiences? I’m in need of a fresh outlook on the situation.
