Ok so I have some questions about this movement. Little background when I first heard the name I was already pretty against it thinking the name meant just being supported while not having to work at all but after reading through some of the posts a lot of it seems fairly reasonable and desirable. (wages keeping up with inflation, work life balance, shorter work weeks etc). But I’m still iffy on some things
So for my first question let’s say there is an able bodied person is capable of work, both mentally and physically, while also being somewhere with jobs available. Is there a point where they shouldn’t be supported by others if they simply refuse to do anything to support themselves?
Another thing I was curious about was shorter work weeks. I’m in favour of this idea and actually worked a job with 4 10 hour days and really enjoyed it. (I know that’s not totally what you guys stand for). I noticed though all the examples seem to be got white collar/office jobs with people saying they can do the same amount of work in less time. That’s all well and good but as a blue collar worker myself it’s hard to imagine doing the same amount of work in less time. I’m busy pretty much all day for 40+ hours a week. I know a lot of people say hire more people but where I live (Alberta) we actually don’t have enough people for the jobs we do have as is. So what I’m wondering is there a solution to this or is this chalked up as the price of business?
Last question I have is how do you guys feel about jobs that will always have overtime. When I was in the oilpatch nobody had any disoluyions about how many hours they’d be working. We were all there that exact reason. Because we wanted to make that extra money. Obviously if a company tells you 40 hours a week and ends up working you more then that on a regular basis that’s a dick move but in some industries where the ads are clear about that is that still all good on your guys book? I ask this because I’ve talked to at least 1 person who said no. I also feel it’s important to mention nobody here was doing it because they needed that extra money to survive. In Canada or at least western Canada hou can live comfortably in a blue collar job working only 40 hours a week. These extra hours were usually spent on “toys” (ie quads, sleds, boats, trucks etc), early retirement or padding the savings (if you were smart), or excessive partying (if you weren’t as smart)
Thanks for taking time to read and I didn’t mean any disrespect. I’m genuinely curious about these things
Side note my dominant hand is in a cast so please excuse any spelling mistakes I didn’t notice
