Is US work culture a cult?

I have taken a year off here and there from working, when I had sufficient money saved up to do so. Living like this is something most workers just cannot comprehend. Of course, managers can't grasp it. But even most low-level workers look at me bug eyed on occasions when I tell them about this. Why do so many wagies loves their cagies? Is it Stockholm Syndrome? Are they not intellectually elevated enough to have hobbies, so the only meaning in their lives can come from grunt work? The US work culture really seems like a cult to me. What say you?
