No, I will not be working overtime on a Saturday.

What I want to tell my supervisor: “The pay just isn’t worth it. Gas prices have gone up exponentially. I have a long commute and I can’t afford a car that doesn’t burn through that gas like crazy. Most of my overtime pay would go towards paying for that gas, so I’d be working an extra couple hours for no overtime pay essentially. The job is dirty and very physical and I barely have time to recover on our current schedule. Plus, I don’t know how long I’d be working, as I’d basically be working until they send me home. I could drive 45 minutes there and back just to work 1 hour if that’s what they decide. And last time I worked a Saturday, they had me work a much harder job because I finished mine so quickly. And that’s not even mentioning how everything else has gone up…

And that’s not even mentioning how everything else has gone up in price to the point that the money I’d be making would literally be used up in minutes. I’d be driving in for an extra couple dollars and wasting part of my Saturday for very little gain. I’m already looking for a new job anyway, so I have no desire to placate you any longer.”

What I’ll be telling my employer:

“Sorry, I can’t make it.”
