Daughter’s manager wants death certificate

Recently, my father passed away rather suddenly. We flew out and spent a long weekend with my mom. My dad was military, and arranging a full military funeral takes a bit, so my daughter put in her request for time off for that. Her manager told her she had to have a certified copy of the death certificate in order to get time off, since we didn’t have the funeral right away. Recently, my father passed away rather suddenly. We flew out and spent a long weekend with my mom. Rather than paying $20 for the certificate, my daughter put in her two week notice. They gave her the time off, but begged her to work 3 days after the trip. She likes her coworkers, so she agreed. But then the big boss got involved and dressed her down for being gone at the end of the month because that’s when they’re busy blah blah blah. But then came the kicker — the boss made the comment that being at her grandfather’s memorial wouldn’t bring him back, so why did my daughter need almost a full week off.

So on Thursday, she’s done. I’m going to give her the money for the whopping 2 days of PTO they were allowing her, and as she noted, what are they going to do, fire her? She already has another job lined up, with a significant pay raise, and they agreed to delay her start date by a week so she can not only go to the memorial, but have time to pack to move (planned before all this happened). The new job even offered the company van to help.
