This may be kind of hard to follow because I am extremely hurt and upset about this.
The publix I worked at only hires minors, elderly people, and disabled people until they hired me as a cashier. I have 12 years experience in retail including management experience. I am extremely well versed in our states alcohol laws and my rights when it comes to selling alcohol. They lowered my hours to only 8 a week from 25 because I denied a very obvious second party sale because the woman who the alcohol was for had a Mexico ID. This is not considered an acceptable form of ID. This woman, whom I denied the alcohol sale, reviewed the publix I work at and admitted the alcohol was for her and said her age was 21. Publix managers approached me, lied, and said the woman was 40. I have a screenshot of this review by the exact woman admitting she was 21 not 40. They then proceeded to tell me to only card people who look under 21 (which is wrong. Even their store policy says people who look under 35). Ever since this lecture, the managers had an attitude with me and wouldn't even acknowledge me saying hello to them. I called alcohol beverage control and they backed up everything I said to them. That it is privilege not a right to buy alcohol. When I quit my job, I recorded the entire conversation. They denied telling me that they said to card people who look under 21. They remembered telling me the couple was 40. They brought up “are you hinting that this is retaliation”. I tried to show them my screenshots of the woman saying she was 21 and the alcohol was for her, they said they didnt want to see it. I tried to show them my recorded conversation with alcoholic beverage control, they said they didnt care to hear it. One manager gave some stupid excuse for my drop in hours that makes absolutely no sense at all. Team leads were transferred to other stores and she said “the district manager would not give us the team leads we wanted, so we had to cut 80 hours to make up for the lack of team leads.” How does this even make sense? We already had team leads, they just transferred them out! Don't you think if there were a drop in positions in the store hours would GO UP? So, this “80 hours they had to cut”, I took 31% of the hit from that? Out of the 60 people that work at the store? Then the assistant store manager said “you are part time, your not guaranteed any amount of hours. I don't really see you staying at 8 hours. But we can't go above it. Your not 100% productive”. The assistant manager completely contradicted what the other manager said. He said I am not 100% productive. We then argued back and forth on my rights on selling alcohol. He said “I dont care what the alcohol board said i want to know if you are going to follow OUR policy”
This is so far from the truth…. I am such a hard worker. I have never once been told in my entire life that I am practically a lazy ass. I passed this store when the board came through! And what do I get, a reduction in hours and a stupid free sub card.
The conversation ended with “are you willing to comply with PUBLIX'S policy” I said no and quit.
I am pissed off, upset, and hurt. I want to contact corporate about this. But I don't know where to start. I don't know if I could have a case with the EEOC. But all I have to say is screw publix. They did me wrong. I have a 5 month old baby. I can't support our son on 8 hours so I had to quit and return to my previous retail employer. I feel bad for the other cashiers that work there. I dont want this happening to someone else. What do I do? I'm not even after lawsuit money, I just do not want this to happen to someone else.
