Company forcing us back in office

I’ve been at the same company for about a year and a half. It’s been going great, I got a huge promotion about 8 months in that basically doubled my income from where it was before I started working there (I also got a size able raise in a lateral move). I was hired in a fully remote position, and while a large % of the company live in my city (the company’s hq) most of my team live in other states. I never really considered that I may have to come into the office as part of this job. 3 months ago, the ceo and the rest of the c suite unveiled their shiny brand new office in the city, about 40 minutes away from me, though it’s an annoying 40 minutes of city traffic. While I was in a remote role, I had just gotten promoted, and was happy to come in occasionally to show my face around there and connect with people I don’t work with everyday. However, I was surprised when my status, and those of several other employees in the city, were changed without warning from remote workers to in-office roles. I was asked to start coming in 2 days a week, even though everyone I worked with except for my boss (who also had his status changed and was pissed about it) don’t even live there.

Anyway, I took it on the chin and continued working fairly happily. A couple weeks ago, the ceo announced he is now asking everyone to come in 4 days a week. I find this incredibly annoying for a few reasons, but what I’m really curious about, is this happening to anyone else?

From what I read it sounds like this is perfectly legal even though it’s super annoying.
