So I applied to intern in production at a non-profit publishing press. The interview was with the Head Publisher (HP) and the lead Production Associate. Before asking this question, HP warns that this next question involves a long story. I take a deep breath.
HP: Let's find out what your last words would be on a sinking ship.
Me: o.O
HP: We're hosting a benefit dinner to raise money for the press. It's an important night. Our wealthiest donors will be in attendance. One of them hates daisies and loves roses. It's very important that all the tables are set with centerpiece floral arrangements of strictly red and white roses. Nothing else will do. I assign this task to you.
The event begins. Wealthy donor walks into the room and immediately exits. I run in to ask you what went wrong and notice that you put daisies on the tables. Not a rose in sight. I specifically told you red and white roses only.
Turns out you didn't get the daisies. You had so much on your plate that you delegated the task to someone else. The person you asked to get flowers made the mistake. But I assigned this task to you.
You just lost our company thousands of dollars by losing this donor's support. It's a huge deal.
I walk up to you, angry, and ask: what happened?
