How to break an unhealthy work relationship?

It is literally just like an emotionally abusive relationship. My partner says it is one. I work for a small mom and pop biz. I was hired at a lowly level and quickly sprinted to the top. I run a huge sector of the business myself and assist my boss in the running of other sectors. I often get involved in side projects that aren’t covered in my job description, not always against my will. I like to help and I have skills that cross into many other sectors of this business. It is abundantly clear that my boss wants me to replace him eventually.

My partner and I are moving and it’s non-negotiable. We don’t have a date set yet but I am filled with anxiety over quitting. I worry that:
– due to the nature of the niche I have carved for myself I will be hard to replace
– the sector I oversee will see struggles without me (the people too)
– my boss will not take it well and will be emotionally hurtful, which he has a reputation for doing

Obviously, the core answer is rip the band aid and move on. But I wanted advice from people who have been in similar situations or felt “resignations remorse.” I follow this sub because I believe in its values. However, I can’t help but feel bad – it’s not a big corporate company that will survive easily and I have seen others in management leave and the problems that occurred. I know that’s not MY PROBLEM. But is this type of guilt common? Does anyone have tips or thoughts on this guilt or dealing with a boss that may make you feel really terrible for leaving?
