I work in a well-known crafts store as a part-time cashier. My store manager came in about a month and a half after I did near the end of last year. Just to give some insight as to the type of boss she is, let me bullet out a few of the things I dislike about her management:
• always changing schedules last minute with no warning. We don’t get notified in any way for schedule changes so now I check my schedule multiple times a day, just in case.
•constant understaffing of the store so she gets a large bonus
•never willing to come up to the front and help the single cashier (me) when the line is 10+ people long, then reprimands cashiers for not calling for backup (which she ignores.)
•has unreasonable standards for the store that don’t match up with the amount of people scheduled. For example, she demands higher customer service but only schedules me to open on our busiest days leading to longer lines, lower rewards numbers since I’m focused on getting through the line as quickly as possible, nobody on the sales floor to assist customers, and the phone ringing out or people being placed on extended holds because I’m multitasking doing literally 8 things at once and have to prioritize in-store customers.
All that is just leadup. My availability for this job is pretty simple on weekdays. No Mondays or Fridays. 9-3 the remaining weekdays. Weekends have a longer availability slot but the ending times are strict because my busses stop running earlier on weekends.
Last Monday, I awoke from a nap to find missed texts from two managers informing me about a shift I was apparently missing. One that I didn’t have the last time I had checked two days prior. (It happened to be my best friend’s birthday, so I was keeping an eye on that day.) Obviously, I didn’t make it in. My manager ignored my text asking why I was scheduled on a day when I have no availability. Then, the following two days i had requested off almost a month in advance and was still put on the schedule. My manager said she had those days covered and not to worry, but didn’t take me off the schedule. It looks to the other managers as though I called out all three days.
Now, not only am I scheduled the next monday and friday, but sunday’s shift goes past my availability as well, meaning the busses won’t be running and I’ll have no transportation home.
I just don’t know why she’d do this, knowing we JUST had an issue with this last week. I’m not the only person who is scheduled outside of their availability. I don’t know how to bring this up in a way that will make it stick. Especially because I’m not one of her favorite employees. I’ve called out a lot because of the stress and disrespect I deal with.
And no, I’m not just bitching. A former coworker literally had a stress-induced seizure because of this job. Another one broke down crying and was belittled by this manager for being a crybaby. I’ve been here longer than any other day floor worker. It’s literal hell. Someone help.
