Left during medical leave, company asking for relo repayment

Hi everyone. I’ll get to the facts: got a job at company X and they said I needed to move across the country (they’ve since allowed workers to be remote but that was NOT an option then) company X had me sign an agreement when they relo’d me that I’d pay it back prorated if I left before the 2 year mark (started at X in June 2021, 2 year mark would be June 2023) had no clue how much X was spending on my relo since they handled movers and all that and I never touched money. There are a few elements of relo I was aware of the cost of because I had to “apply” for them. Those things totaled ~$15k in Feb/march, I had health issues and doc recommended I go on medical leave for 6 months. I thought that was too much to ask for, went…

Hi everyone. I’ll get to the facts:

  • got a job at company X and they said I needed to move across the country (they’ve since allowed workers to be remote but that was NOT an option then)

  • company X had me sign an agreement when they relo’d me that I’d pay it back prorated if I left before the 2 year mark (started at X in June 2021, 2 year mark would be June 2023)

  • had no clue how much X was spending on my relo since they handled movers and all that and I never touched money. There are a few elements of relo I was aware of the cost of because I had to “apply” for them. Those things totaled ~$15k

  • in Feb/march, I had health issues and doc recommended I go on medical leave for 6 months. I thought that was too much to ask for, went on leave for 3 months – end of March to July 5

  • during my leave I decided it was actually best for my health to leave X and I put in my notice in early May

  • X was actually very nice about my departure and I thought positively about my exit. There was no exit interview though. HR didn’t really contact me. I just sent back my laptop and stopped working for them (was WFH)

  • 7 weeks after I put in my notice, X sent me an email telling me that my relo cost $36k and I owed 51%. With a tax adjustment that comes to about $15k

  • I have asked if there’s any alternative (reducing or waiving this requirement), and I have asked for a breakdown of how my relo cost $36k

I know how the law works and I know I signed the agreement and I left of my own free will (albeit, due to health reasons). But is there any recourse whatsoever? TYIA
