Company can’t “afford” a keyboard

So as the title implies, I need a new keyboard. Not the one on my laptop, just your basic “plug in and go” keyboard that they sell on Amazon for roughly $10. My IT team just informed me that they can’t replace it due to “budget limitations”. Might be somewhat understandable (I guess? I mean we’re a multi million dollar company with a lot of well know brands as clients), but they also approved $40 PER PERSON for a “fun” team building activity.

That we’re supposed to figure out what to do with. That we were given a month to use.

My boss waited until a week before our time was up to use it to ask us exactly what we wanted to use the funds for. Not only that, but he is also OOO for the rest of the week and got snippy with us (I manage with 3 other managers) for not having it sorted out beforehand, even though he didn’t appoint anyone to take care of it. Essentially he asked the team what they wants to do, said okay, and then did nothing. I found a hosted event within the budget that would cater to both our in office/remote employees, but that was dismissed bc another manager said he wanted prizes and lunch to be catered and my boss ate that up. So, my boss is now buying a trivia game from a store so he can host for some employees to win $15 gift cards instead of a professionally hosted experience that would be so much less stressful for everyone and not cause hurt feelings due to some employees not getting some shitty gift cards. I would’ve preferred the $40 cash, but whatever.

I was cool(ish) with the paragraph above, but they can’t replace a KEYBOARD? But yea, let the boss man spend $20 on a trivia game, decide what we should eat for lunch and hand out prizes that I know the non-winning employees will get upset about. Thumbs up brother!

In unrelated news, if anyone has a remote position that they’re hiring for, please lmk. I’ve worked in sales, marketing, customer service, etc. Please note that I will need a keyboard. 🙂
