So I work as a receptionist/ adoption specialist at a shelter, flash back about a month ago close to closing for the day a man came in with a bag of raw hides to donate, we can’t use rawhides, which we were going to tell him but his pushy very off vibe made us feel maybe we should just accept them. He wanted us to let him into the kennels to give the dogs the treats, which we can’t do and let him know. He accepted that and mentioned he was going to volunteer at the shelter before he left. I asked his name before he left and politely said I’d look out for him. After we closed my coworker and I called our volunteer manager up front and told her hey this guy came in said he was going to volunteer kinda was being pushy and making us uncomfortable, maybe just look out for him, gave her his name and he immediately said she’s told him multiple times he couldn’t volunteer with us because he has multiple felonies.
Thought that was that until today
He came in again today wanting to adopt a dog, okay fine whatever not all felonies mean your a bad person. But he was again being pushy and making everyone uncomfortable. He only wanted to meet with our dogs with serious behavior problems, after he left to meet a dog me and my same coworker decided to quick search his name and state to see if it was something serious he did and if we needed to be cautious. And we were right. He threatened to bomb and shoot up a college campus for not accepting him, when his home was searched they found dozens of weapons. Me and my coworker already didn’t feel comfortable with him but now the fear if we have to tell him no for a certain dog that he would hurt us was there. My coworker was visibly shaking and on the verge of a panic attack and asked our supervisor if she could no longer deal with this client and someone else could. The supervisor told her she was being judgmental and had to work with him despite being able to see she was scared and panicked.
Can our supervisors force us to work with clients we feel uncomfortable with?
