So I’m a diesel mechanic working for one of the largest transportation companies in the world. They are hard pressed to find and keep employees. Since starting in 2019 I’ve seen 2 people transfer to other locations and 5 have quit. We currently have 3 mechanics (which includes me) trying to maintain a location with hundreds of pieces of equipment. And from what I hear we are about to be down to 2 lol. The shop should have 7 mechanics considering all the equipment we have. So they are offering $5k sign on bonus and top pay to start in hopes of “finding quality candidates”. So everyone regardless of time accumulated with the company or skill level will be making the same hourly. Who comes up with these ideas? Why not give $5k bonus to current employees also? Why is no one focusing on employee retention? Clearly your current employees are unhappy??? Is it not obvious?? I will likely leave as well because we are only allotted 3 sick days a year. Just so frustrating because it seems all these companies are the same.
