Forced to retire after surgery

I work at the small liberal arts college I went to (10 years later) and was so happy to see my favorite security guard still kickin’ around after all these years. He’s the type to stop and chat when he sees you on campus and a couple months back he told me he had to take some time off for some leg surgery. Flash forward to today, he catches me and says they’re throwing him a retirement party. At first I was like, “oh, congrats!” but it turns out he’s being forced out. The college is claiming that they can’t keep his insurance running after 9 months of no work despite him still needing at least 2 more rounds of PT.
