A little justice

In the last two months my father died and my wife’s grandmother passed. We’d been taking care of her for months and getting her prepped for supportive housing but it wasn’t surprising that at 100 her decline came quickly. Through all of this I was a faithful employee, took no time when my father passed and was encouraged to take bereavement time by my supervisor when my wife’s grandmother went. There was a lot to do regarding the funeral and my wife really needed the support, so I took two whole days. On a recent Friday HR rejected my bereavement and held up payroll.

They needed my supervisor to undo her approval but she was no where to be found. My supervisor is the only remote employee in the company and she also happened to decide to take vacation a week early asking us to cover for them.

My supervisor also happened to catch COVID during the vacation. I expressed to HR that their stance on bereavement seemed particularly petty given I was encouraged to take leave. The bereavement thing was just the latest in a series of morale crushing moves by HR, including forcing those with COVId to come to work etc.

They told me they offer industry leading PTO (they don’t) and threatened my job.

My supervisor didn’t mention they told me to take the time.

A week later the offer for a dream job I’d been waiting for came in. My supervisor was shocked when I put in notice but noted it’s just not worth standing up to HR.

HR still hasn’t acknowledged my resignation except for posting my position. What’s funny is this organization’s terrible Glassdoor reviews all mention how petty HR is. I suspect some sort of revenge is coming but fuck them.
