Antiwork

A month ago, I was working at Starbucks. Now, as a 21 year old I own my own business!

I seriously never thought I would be here. I am still attending community college and just moved in with my fiancé one year ago. I was a shift supervisor at Starbucks for 2+ years. At the END of my employment there, after working there for almost 3 years total, I was making $16 an hour. It was the same amount that shift supervisors who had been promoted 2 weeks before I left was making. For over a year prior to me leaving I had been promised full time hours. I was regularly getting between 22 and 28. I rarely crossed over the 30 hour threshold. That wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg. In the last year of my employment my store had been through 4 store managers. Each one worse than the last. Our very last one was the worst of the whole bunch. She didn’t give a FUCK…

She didn’t give a FUCK about us. She never gave anyone the hours they needed, even if it was for the purpose of keeping their benefits, like health insurance and the ability to go to college. She didn’t defend us against abusive customers. She overworked us endlessly and had extremely unrealistic expectations.

So, I started cleaning houses on the side. I started out making $20/hour – which was heaps better than what Starbucks paid me and the work was a lot better. This was in approximately July of 2021 – after a month of not getting the hours I was promised. December of 2021, I decided I was going to clean homes full time. Hopefully make a business out of it.

I put my two weeks in at Starbucks (for the second time) on December 1st 2021. My last working day was December 13th 2021. Mid January 2022 I file for the LLC and EID paperwork. End of January I get the paperwork back, make a Fb page and business cards and am official!

I’ve since gained 10 new clients who pay me on average $40/hour without batting an eye, plus tips sometimes! In the last 2 days, I cleaned 2 houses for a total of 7 hours total and made $275 total.

Seriously, ALL of you can do better. You are not stuck where you are. You have skills you haven’t even uncovered yet.

Should I continue on this path, I should hopefully make $50k working only 25 hours a week. I know this doesn’t seem like a lot, but honestly I w didn’t think making this much money would even be possible for me until I was 30+. I’m so overwhelmed but at the same time this is the happiest I have ever been. I’m truly proud of what I do now and I feel like I’m actually making a difference in peoples lives. It’s a wonderful feeling.
