Advice: Company that laid me off wants me to come back as contractor.

Hoping that people who faced similar situation can advise me on this. Last week I was suddenly laid-off from my company. It was devastating bc I was blindsided and really enjoyed my job. I worked as a business analyst and in the weeks prior, had setup an important meeting with a distributor. The talk was setup this week and my former director (who was devastated to lose me) and CEO went ahead with the meeting and it was very fruitful. The CEO was very impressed and my director mentioned that I found them and set it all up, etc. The CEO apparently realized they needed someone to manage these partnerships among many of the other things I was doing and my director reached out to me to ask how I would feel coming back as a contractor and eventually coming back full time within a month or 2 if I…

The CEO was very impressed and my director mentioned that I found them and set it all up, etc. The CEO apparently realized they needed someone to manage these partnerships among many of the other things I was doing and my director reached out to me to ask how I would feel coming back as a contractor and eventually coming back full time within a month or 2 if I don’t find anything else. Despite what happened, I honestly wouldn’t mind working in the contractor capacity while I continue the job search. I also wouldn’t mind coming back full time if I don’t find anything suitable in this timeframe. I guess I want to know:

  • if coming back is a good idea?
  • I signed a termination letter that secured severance if i sent back my laptop (did so this week). If I accept a new contract, is that now void? Or should I still get it?

A few notes:
– in new contract, pay is structured as commission from revenue generated from these business deals. I don’t have exact terms yet
– I’m fairly young in my career with only 4ish years of corporate experience. This is my first analyst position and it almost 3 months. My previous experience is all administrative. I eventually want to get into project management and/or consulting
