I'm giving this advice to all who care to read it and are currently considering entering healthcare via becoming a personal support worker (PSW), health care aide (HCA), or home care worker (HCW).
DO NOT EVEN BOTHER APPLYING FOR SCHOOLING OR ENTERING THE FIELD!
This is coming from a PSW who has been in the industry for close to two decades and has seen its ups and now nearly constant downs. Take it from me, the career is no longer worth it and most of us oldtimers are now starting to leave thanks to the added stresses of the pandemic and constant short-staffing.
You're never going to be paid fairly and will always be stuck doing the work of 3 people, you're always going to be burnt out or on the verge of it, management will always never have a clue about what they're doing, and if you work in community care you'll never be paid the actual wear and tear of your personal vehicle.
I write all this as I'm preparing to abandon the career myself and burn the certificate that I was once so proud of.
You're better finding some low-level office job with a small percentage of the stress, weekends off, and a consistent 9-5 schedule.
