Hey all! Not my first time posting, but somethings came up at my job that I’d appreciate the further left of us’ opinions on.
Context: I am a teacher for a for profit company in Japan. Not my first choice of job, but circumstances necessitated it — I am working on chancing careers but not financially able to quit outright just yet.
The situation:
My school is very understaffed — it’s just me and a constantly exasperated and micromanaging teacher with whom I butt heads with often.
A few weeks back, some scheduling issues made me make the decision to skip my lunch break — her response to this was to get extremely made and yell at me in front of our boss. In Japan, this could be considered “power harassment” – something companies take really seriously because they can get the in a lot of legal trouble for ignoring.
Should I make a report? I’m concerned because on one hand, she is a fellow worker and I don’t want to cause her any harm. On the other hand, working with her has really taken a toll on my mental health, and I do feel like her attitude affects the children we teach negatively.
Obviously this is a complicated situation, but after nearly two weeks of her being out sick, she’s just returned today and has already put a huge damper on my mood and the teaching environment. It hurts me to think that the way she conducts herself at work might (imho, does) affect the kids. If I were to submit a report, it would be in an effort to make this environment better for them, not me being petty.
I appreciate all of your advice and support!
