Advice wanted: Coworker uses the term “we” when directly asking me to do something for him

I am not his assistant, I am his equal. We have the same job but he has a few additional responsibilities since he’s been with the company longer than I have. He has a God complex and loves to speak condescending to people and doesn’t see that he’s always the problem. To date I have been complying with his requests because it’s just been easier to do them instead of argue or say anything back. However last week he asked me to do something – I did it – and instead of saying thank you he critiqued what I did and said it should be done this way. The task was something I didn’t even need to go in the first place. I responded and said okay we’ll moving forward it just makes sense for you to do xyz. He didn’t respond.

Today I know he’s going to say.

Lets do xyz. Can we do xyz?

AKA can you do xyz. Can you do xyz?

It’s driving me insane.

He’s also a little baby and runs to the boss with ANY complaints or when anyone doesn’t do their job. So that’s been the reason I haven’t straight up said no.

I’m thinking to just respond each time “Yes you can” to at least make him CLARIFY he’s asking me to do something

Any advice or tips to dealing with this would be helpful!

Also, I just work with him and another coworker and ALL they do once management leaves is talk shit about everyone. The constant negativity is just another reason why I just simply don’t want to do what he “asks.”
