Always be applying for other jobs

I know it’s not very anti work sentiment, but seriously, everyone should always be looking at other job opportunities. It has so many benefits, you practice your interview skills, you see what other companies are offering and you can use it as leverage against your employer. I had a hr meeting with my boss where I was going to be reprimanded for not staying late to finish work, I managed to swing it into a negotiation about my salary because I mentioned that people had reached out to me from organisation x (a direct competitor) offering me that amount. Ended up with an extra 20,000 euros a year and more vacation days. It also puts the ball firmly in your court rather than being at the whim of your boss.
