I’m a college student working in a restaurant. It’s very small, and we usually only have about 4 people working at a time. Due to the fact that we only have 4 people on at once, we are on our feet during our entire shifts, and we don’t have breaks. I have been working at this restaurant for over a year now, and my coworkers and I have just come to accept the fact that we will never have breaks.
I have frequently been told that I should quit and find another job, but I make fantastic money for someone my age and I don’t see myself making the same tips at another restaurant.
The longer I work there however, the more frustrated I become with the situation.
A few weeks ago I almost hit my breaking point. I was scolded by my manager for stopping to take a drink of water during a rush. For context, it was my first sip of water in 3 hours. So not only do we not have breaks, we don’t even have an opportunity to eat or drink water.
My coworkers and I all agree that this is some BS, but even 18-22 year olds are so stressed about money right now that we endure this.
I don’t even know what the point of this post is. I suppose I just needed to rant about this situation I have found myself in. Any advice would also be appreciated. Thank you for reading this far.
