am i legally required to reimburse a guest for tipping me on top of auto grat? my boss told me i added an additional $77 tip on a check.

long story short, i had a table a few weeks ago come in. 14-top super easy. the total bill before our 20% auto grat. was $385. the auto grat. made it to $462. the guest then tipped me an additional 20%, meaning the total was $539. so he tipped 40% total. we have handhelds at our restaurant. the guest would have seen the $462 total. my boss is telling me that i “closed the check with the total $462 and added $77 on top of that.” and that i owe him that $77 because payroll was already submitted for that date. do i legit have to pay him that money? i wasn’t being shady and adding more to the tip.
