Today I was asked to download yet ANOTHER double factor authentication app on my phone for work.
My job does not pay for my phone service. It is a personal phone.
I put my foot down and said that I am at my limit for what I utilize my personal phone for work.
This is after:
-During COVID, the main line phone calls were forwarded to my personal phone for work from home “privileges”.
-Tested mobile versions of trainings on my phone
-Already use my personal phone and personal email for double factor authentication for my work laptop
-Have used my mobile hotspot numerous times a month due to their internet not being able to support an essential application database
-Have e-mail and chat installed on my phone
-I have to use my personal internet when working with a client and the website we need to access is blocked by the companies firewall settings
(I’m sure I missed some but this is the general idea)
Everyone else on the team receives compensation for their phone service to be considered business. I do not necessarily want my phone to be a business phone.
Personal phone for business use is not in the job description and the contract I signed didn’t mention anything about this.
This is already after I’ve had to get a part time job to keep up with the cost of living outside of the city I work in and spend at least $500 a month on transportation.
Is this extra expense too much to ask for? And am I ridiculous to refuse personal phone use for work if this expense is not covered by them?
