I have been working in large medical system that has 7+ hospitals, 6 clinic malls, 160+ smaller clinics for the last 21 years all in different parts of their Materials Management system. They paid for my B.S. in Materials Management with a few lean and 5S certifications.
4 years ago I wrote a proposal to change to a new computer system for all of that buildings materials management in 1 of there hospitals. It included all new racking on the units, rework all of our storage in the building, new hardware, new software, training, and the rest of the 99 yards. I put an estimated cost of $350,000 and to max out at $500,000 with a 18 month as long they do not drag there feet.
It took me right at 13 months to get the first hospital (level 2 trauma center with 130 beds) 100% changed over to the new system with out any interruptions to the supply chain. Shrinkage dropped from 24+% and in the last year is under 3%. Labor dropped by around 10%. They went from getting between 30 to 55 deliveries from their warehouses to 25 or less most weeks, but did have a week where they got 32 deliveries due to a 3 day shut down in the software the warehouses use.
Over the last 32 months I have changed over 100+ stand alone clinics, 3 clinic malls, and 4 of their hospitals. I have trained 5 people to be able to change over to the new system, but none of them have the “lean mindset” that is what is needed to make the system work and have had to clean up there messes once they gave up.
Friday I was called to a meeting with a lot of suits about changing both of the warehouses over to the new system. I told them the same thing I have said from day 1 that I'm not sure how that part of the software works and I'm not sure how to set up the new system to be able to ship to the old system. I have not had the supplier training on that part of the software package and I do know it was not part of the software lease that I needed. Due to turning down the project they are moving my office from 20 miles from my house and there moving my office 65 miles from my house so I can work on different part of their organization.
After long talks with my wife I plan on turning in my 30 day notice on Monday. I'm 44, I will get my 470+ hours of PTO, will be able to take early retirement from the company and get about $400 a month, and will be able to work full time in my wife's fish breeding business. Even with the pandemic we would be able to scape by off her sales and they have been picking back up, but not near what they were years ago.
Am I making the wrong choice?
