Am I the asshole for expecting to finish on time?

Background: I work maintenance in the factory. This week I am on the early (0500-1330) shift. The factory is understaffed, having lost two fitters and an apprentice without replacement in the last 3 months, so now there is only one fitter on each shift and one electrician for the whole factory. Yesterday I was trying to fix a pump that wasn't working. By 1300 I was no closer to fixing the problem. The manager came snooping around and insisted that we “needed” this machine working for tomorrow. I pointed out that I was due to go home soon. He said quote “if that's your attitude, don't bother coming in tomorrow.” I eventually fitted a replacement pump and got the machine working and was all finished for 1700, 3.5 hours after my shift was due to finish. I wouldn't have minded if the boss had asked nicely if I could stay…

I wouldn't have minded if the boss had asked nicely if I could stay late, but the way he said it made it sound like I was the one with the attitude problem.
