An “internship” required to train higher ups

Sometime this year I interviewed for an accountant-like position. The position would be working under multiple individuals as an intern. The catch was that I would be required to learn their operating system, how to centralize and/or improve their data functionality, then train all of my higher ups in the new ways to use the system. All that for only $15 an hour & less than a week's vacation time for the first year. Made a counter offer but they would not negotiate. I don't know why they think $15 an hour is worth me driving 45 minutes both ways working 5am-2pm, or how I could afford rent if I wanted to live closer to the job location.
